Educational aims


Knowledge of scientific terminology and understanding of the theoretical aspects and applications contained in the textbook.
Applying knowledge and understanding in the interpretation and critical evaluation of the results of descriptive statistical analysis.
Making judgments and consequent ability to develop logical deductive considerations needed to work independently in the research and selection of data to support statistical analysis and use of official statistical sources.
Communication skills to disclose in discussing the results of analyzes conducted using appropriate forms of communication according to the interlocutors.
Learning skills to be able to apply the methods and tools acquired to update and deepen the contents studied, even in professional contexts, and to undertake further studies.


Content of the course

The statistical population and the statistical units. Characters and their statistical modes. Measurement scales. Univariate analysis. Frequency distributions. Grouping into classes. The frequencies cumulative function of a statistical variable. Measures of position: mean, mode, median, quantiles. Measures of dispersion: interquartile range, variance, standard deviation. Box-plot diagram. Tchebychev's inequality. Heterogeneity.

Bivariate analysis. Bivariate statistical variates and bivariate statistical variables. Definitions, conjoint frequencies distribution, marginal distributions and conditional distributions. Mean and variance of a conditional variable. The covariance and its properties. The analysis of depencence. Statistical dependence (and its measures). Dependence in mean (and its measures). Linear regression. Ordinary least squares approach and simple linear regression. Regression diagnostics.

The study of time series and statistical reports and their classification. The index numbers simple and complex: construction and applications. The FOI price index and the coefficient of currency appreciation. statistical reports.


Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics.
