Educational Aims
The course aim is to improve students’ speaking skills. As such, students are requested to give a brief presentation in English based on different topics relating to a newspaper article provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
Course Contents
Students should be able to give a presentation in English. Attendance is not compulsory. Students are expected to coordinate group activities and elaborate on topics selected at the beginning of the course. Students therefore are strongly advised to be present at the first scheduled lessons in order to designate groups, roles and assignments. Presentation dates will be fixed at the course beginning. A pass or fail mark will be assigned during the course in the second semester. The articles on which the presentations are based will be read after each presentation.
Prerequisites
To attend the course students are expected to have passed the first level English course.
Attendance
Attendance is not compulsory. Students are expected to coordinate group efforts and to develop themes assigned at the beginning of the course. Students are encouraged to contact the course instructor if in need of assistance or clarification.
Teaching Materials
Articles and a presentation dossier with relative instructions will be provided and made available at the beginning of the course. Students are expected to create slides to accompany their presentations in PowerPoint.
Examination
Following the aforementioned guidelines is highly recommended. After the instructor’s assessment students will be given a pass or fail mark based on their performance. Students planning on giving their presentations during the exam sessions must in any case contact the instructor at the beginning of the course in order to receive assignments, topics and articles. These students will have the task of giving an in depth presentation and will also be assessed on a group discussion regarding topics related to their articles following their presentations. Students cannot sit the English exam not more than three times during the academic school year. More information regarding examination guidelines can be found at the following link:
