Educational aims
The course provides some useful tools for firms in order to match the goals of growth, productivity and profitability.
The first part of the course focus on potential cost savings deriving from an increase of the firm size (scale economies) or associated to horizontal diversification and vertical integration. Firm growth implies a structural change that must be evaluated also in terms of impact on productivity.
The second part of the course is oriented to understand the impact of pricing strategies on the profitability of a business unit. The economic principles behind the adoption of a suitable pricing strategy are analyzed, in relation with the type of product (or service) and the degree of market competition. A particular emphasis is given to the topic of revenue management.
Content of the course
This course is divided in two parts.
Part 1 – The impact of firm growth on costs and productivity (Prof. Fraquelli) - 4 CFU
Economies of scale and horizontal and vertical scope economies.
Productive transformation and firm productivity changes.
Part 2 – Pricing strategies and revenue management (Prof. Abrate) - 4 CFU
The strategic role of price and its impact on profitability
Unique price and multiple prices.
Multiple products and pricing strategies.
Dynamic pricing strategies.
